Hi Ivo ! These very well made American Smelt lures will soon be put to the test on giant salmon and browns in Lake Ontario at Olcott NY. My feeling tells me that the chartreuse model will be the one that entices that trophy we all dream about during the in between timeline. These lures are Dragon Slayers for sure and will certainly hold up agains any of the tackle smashers we battle. Very well crafted lures for certain!

This lure was way bigger than expected. Ordered online with weight as the only scale. I got the smallest one they have, but it's still way too big. It looks good, but want a scaled down version. I have nothing to fish this with.

In the springtime I fish in shallow water. American Smelt casts like a bullet into shallow water, yet it runs shallow and does not get tangled in the weeds. Later in the season I will use deeper-running, heavier lures, but American Smelt is perfect for this time of year. Already caught my first bass on it!

Excellent product
The good, the bad and the ugly The good My first day I ran the lure I had a screaming King on almost spooled me then came unhooked very exciting! The Bad The next day I had another King screaming thought it came unhooked but found out the split ring on the treble hook lost its shape and the hook. I save a picture of the lure with the bad split ring. The ugly The ugly part is I lost both fish Note: My confidence in this lure is still good that I bought more in other colors. Deep diving gold American smelt Sept 2022 Was recently fishing the nipigon river with my ojibway guide. We took a break from fishing brook trout to fish cohoes and chinooks. He was adamant about using a certain rapala lure for trolling for them. In fact that’s all he had to use. Things changed when I started using the gold American smelt catching salmon one right after another. He now has my Thundermist lure and I have to purchase a new one. Enough said.

Shallow n Deep Divers Models I especially like the Natural Shallow Diver during the California Grunion runs for SF Corvina and sometimes White Seabass. (AKA Sea Trout, Weakfish) I like Chartreuse and Purple Deep divers for near shore palagics. They work best in areas where the bait fish consist mostly of smelt, instead if sardines and anchovies. If you could get your Mojo Mackys down to a about 3.5" Jr. size, I'm sure that thing would "kill". The current size is perfect for Yellowtail, but tiny bite size Mack's can be a rare commodity that some preditoy fish can't resist.
American Smelt Deep Diver is Great I agree EXACTLY with the previous review. The deep diver is a fantastic lure. Very well made and I have achieved depths of 22 feet when trolled with braid. The shallow diver does not troll properly. Would really like a shallow diver model of this lure that is made to troll shallow depths.
Store owner replied: Hello James - so glad you are enjoying the American Smelt deep dive, and regarding the shallow dive - we have 2 models. 1 version is a "jerk bait" and this one will not troll well and is not meant to be trolled, as it is made to be "twitched". The other shallow dive (i.e. not the jerk bait) is an actual shallow dive that will dive and troll great, and dives 2 feet. Thanks again for taking time to write and good luck on the water :)
Smelt deep diver & shallow The deep diving smelt is awesome and caught lots of fish on it. But for the shallow smelt the lip on it is to small and doesn’t have the good swimming action. Never caught a fish on it yet. I hope thundermist lure company reads this and comes up with a better lip action on the shallow smelt. I give 5 stars to the deep diving smelt I give 1 star to the shallow smelt
Store owner replied: Great to hear you are catching fish on the American Smelt :) The shallow dive model is a jerk bait, and thus intended only to be twitched under the surface, which produces great action this way - it is not intended to be trolled with or straight retrieve - however, next year, we will introduce a new model with a different lip (as you have also suggested) that can be used as a jerk bait, as well as a trolling/cranking bait as well - so stay tuned.
